The Macnab
The MacNab restaurant is open 7 days a week for breakfast and dinner and specialises in locally sourced Scottish food and game. Seasonally, as available, a game tasting- menu alongside a locally picked or foraged vegetarian selection is offered.
Highland Perthshire and the Loch Rannoch area is an abundant playground for sportsmen and women and the restaurant derives its moniker from the MacNab Challenge; to successfully stalk a red stag, catch a salmon on the fly and shoot a brace of grouse in a single day between dawn and dusk.
The History of the MacNab Challenge
The MacNab Challenge as the ultimate sporting achievement was first recognised by The Field magazine in 1925 and has been officially tracked every year since. In 2025, the 100th anniversary of the MacNab Challenge, The Field recorded 20 triumphant “MacNab’s”.
The challenge originated from the book “John MacNab” by author John Buchan which was published a year earlier in 1924. The novel tells the tale of a group of eminent Londoners (a bank chief executive, a leading solicitor and a member of the House of Lords) who relieve their boredom by risking their reputations in a challenge to poach a stag and salmon from under the noses of the lairds and ghillies on three Highland estates.
John Buchan was born in Perth in 1875 and is best known for another of his books “The Thirty-Nine Steps” that later became a blockbuster film adapted by Alfred Hitchcock.
